...I post an update. I'm sure my readers have moved on by this point. It's been about 8 months since I last posted - totally unacceptable. However, I do have some good reasons - a new baby and a new house along with some personal hardships that I don't want to get into. My routine was thrown completely out of whack and blogging fell to the bottom of my priority list.
I'd planned on changing that by participating again in the A-Z Challenge, but couldn't get my ducks in a row on time. However, I do want to start blogging regularly again, even if I'm doing it just for me. What I love about blogging is the ability to capture moments in my life that I can look back on months and even years later.
Last year at this time, I was in the third trimester of my pregnancy and my mileage was on the decline. Oh what a difference a year makes! This year I'm in week 13 of training for the Pittsburgh Marathon on May 4th. I'm up to 51 miles this week! I've chronicled the process up to now on Daily Mile and Facebook. At this point, though, I've been doing a lot of research into nutrition and mental training techniques and want to record those here on the blog for my future reference.
I'm running the Pittsburgh Marathon for the ALS Association of Western Pennsylvania. In April of 2013 my father-in-law was diagnosed with this awful disease which slowly affects nerve cells in the brain. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons causes loss of all voluntary muscle actions and eventually total paralysis. The life expectancy of a person diagnosed with ALS is 2-5 years, but the quality of life is no longer what it was and there is no cure. In the past year, my father-in-law has lost the ability to talk and to eat. It's a daily struggle for him to swallow and breathe. In the face of his helplessness and my feeling of hopelessness, I'm running for Team ALS to raise awareness and money to help find a cure.
